Young Mountaineer Found Dead After Disappearing During A Mountain Tour In Austria
A young climber who went missing after he set off on a climbing tour has been found dead after he fell more than 300 feet down a rugged cliff.
Michael Poimer from the city of Linz, Austria, began the journey at Lake Alm, in Upper Austria and was about to finish it three days later on Saturday, 16th September.
But when the 29-year-old failed to arrive home as promised, his mum Irene Poimer raised the alarm urging cops to initiate an immediate search operation in Austria’s Dead Mountains the next day.
The search carried out by crews from the Gmunded Alpine Police, and the Gruenau mountain rescue service.

Police dogs and two helicopters were also set to find the missing mountaineer and had searched for days.
Irene wrote on her Facebook profile on 18th September: “I ask for your help! My son Michael set off from Foehrengrateneck on the 14th September, heading towards Faeustling – that’s in Upper Austria at the Almsee.
“Did anyone see him on the 14th and 15th? Or the 16th and 17th? Has anyone heard cries for help?
“Yesterday afternoon cries for help were heard independently by three people and dogs picked up his scent. There’s still a slight chance!”
A day later the 29-year-old missing alpinist spotted by one of the helicopters, searching in the area of Faeustling at around 10.50am.
His lifeless body was located 100 metres (328 feet) down a steep cliff where he reportedly fell in the early evening of 14th September, 2023.
In a follow-up post, Irene wrote: “Thank you all very much for your overwhelming help. Unfortunately, my dear son could only be recovered dead today.”
Michael’s memorial service will take place at 10am at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Linz on Monday, 4th October.
The funeral will take place three hours later, at 1pm, in the parish cemetery in the Urfahr-Umgebung district.
