Austrian Girl Discovers Scorpion In Luggage And It Will Now be Sent Back Home

A young Austrian girl got the fright of her life when she discovered a scorpion while unpacking her luggage after a holiday in Croatia.

But after being caught, the family have now been given the all-clear for the arachnid to be taken back where it came from by a friend who will be going on holiday in the region shortly.

The 11-year-old who found the scorpion and who was not named had just got back from a two-week vacation in the sunny south with her family.

As she spotted the unexpected fellow traveller, the girl immediately got clear and informed her brother, 14, and their mother.

The courageous mum then put the black seven-centimetre (2.76 inch) arachnid into a bowl which she put into the bathroom of the family home in the province of Lower Austria in the northeast of the Central European country.

A short video taken by a family member shows the almost motionless arachnid in a white empty bowl.

The woman and her husband – report local media on 18th July – then consulted wildlife experts and animal shelter managers to find out how to proceed.

The family were told to put the scorpion in a box featuring a few small holes to ensure the supply of oxygen.

As they were sharing their experience with pals and relatives, a friend who is about to spend some days off in Croatia got in touch.

The woman – not named by Austrian media – offered to take the creepy-crawly back to its natural habitat.

After being told by experts that this would be an ideal solution, the family happily agreed.

Scorpions are predatory arachnids. There are more than 2,500 different species in the world.

Scorpions have a pair of grasping pincers, eight legs and a narrow tail which is often carried in a characteristic forward curve over their back.

In Croatia, the arachnid animals can usually be found on the Adriatic Coast which is one of Europe’s most popular summer holiday destinations.

The Croatian scorpion species issue venomous stings. However, they do not pose a lethal threat to humans as their poison is too weak.

However, scorpion stings can cause pain, swelling and redness.

When being stung by a scorpion, it is advised to clean the sting spot and apply a cool compress.

If necessary, the victim may take a painkiller.

Vulnerable individuals are advised to seek medical assistance if being stung by a scorpion.
